Program Description:
Visit Beijing and learn about Chinese culture and history. Visit the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven, and a typical Chinese neighborhood.

At the same time, learn about traditional Chinese medicine at the Zhongfang International Red Cross Hospital. You will also learn ancient Chinese work energy like tai chi chuan and qigong at the breath taking Zhangjiajie National Forest Park- where Avatar was filmed.

This program is open to all students interested in developing a greater understanding of Chinese Culture and Philosophy. Special emphasis is placed on learning about Traditional Chinese Medicine and the ancient arts of Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong. The first part of the program is part of the Chen-style Tai Chi Centre Group.  Participants receive introductory to intermediate training in the ancient arts of tai chi chuan and qigong with a focus on the health aspects of these activities. Site-seeing to a number of great locations in China that incorporated into this part of the program and are detailed in the itinerary below. The second part of the program is at a Traditional Chinese Medicine teaching hospital, where students stay while learning the philosophy behind Eastern Medicine. Teaching includes demonstrations of acupuncture, moxibustion, formulation of herbal preparations, tui na, and other treatment modalities.

No prior experience or coursework required; however, an introductory Tai Chi course is recommended and an introductory biology or chemistry course is helpful.

The China Trip will focus on exploring the wonderful art of tai chi and qigong with some of the highest level masters in China. It will include visiting many of the incredible attractions, such as Beijing, Zhengzhou, Shaolin Temple, Tai Chi village, Wudang mountain and Zhangjiajie Forest Park. All training with Master Liming Yue is covered during the Trip and additional training with Grandmasters is available at extra cost. Students will also be eligible for additional Duan Wei grading by the Chinese Wushu Association and Qigong Federation (minimum number is required) .

Additional training, grading and competition fees:
$129.00 per person covers eight hours intensive training with Grandmaster Li Zhiyi on Shen Gong
$51.60 per person covers three hours training with Grandmaster Chen Yu on Chen Style Tai Chi Form and Application;
$51.60 per person covers three hours training with Shaolin Master on Form and Application;
$161.25 per person covers two days of training and assessement for Chinese Wushu and £105.00 per person covers Qigong grading (exclude certificate fee).

Day 0 - Friday, August 2

Day 1 - Saturday, August 3
Place & Transport: Arrive in Beijing
Today's Activities: Airport to Hotel Transfer (Upon arriving in Beijing, you will be met by a CSI Study Abroad Team member to help you in your arrival to China and transfer to the meeting hotel); You will check in with your WOU advisor, meet with the other students in the group and then have a free evening to explore the many restaurants and shops close to the hote.l

Day 2 - Sunday, August 4
Place & Transport: Beijing
Today's Activities: Planning meeting in the morning; Join the Chen Style Tai Chi Group. Afternoon visit to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square

The Forbidden City: The Forbidden City was home to 24 emperors between 1368 and 1911.This city within a city is a World Heritage Site, and is the largest and the best preserved ancient imperial architecture complex in the world, with great square, halls and gates contrast with intricate halls, gardens, courtyards and quarters. The exhibitions, both permanent and temporary, are all important treasures of ancient China.
Tiananmen Square: Tian'anmen Square is the largest city square in the centre of Beijing, named after theTiananmen (literally, Gate of Heavenly Peace) which sits to its north, separating it from the Forbidden City. It has great cultural significance as it was the site of several key events in Chinese history. As the world's largest city square and enduring symbol of China's national pride, it is surrounded by many imposing buildings including the Heavenly Gate      (entry to the Forbidden City), Museums, government buildings and Chairman Mao's Mausoleum.

Day 3 - Monday, August 5
Place & Transport: Beijing
Today's Activities: Temple of Heaven and Tian Tan Park - Tai Chi and Qigong practice in the morning, additional training is available with Grandmaster Chen Yu in the afternoon. Additional Shaolin Kungfu show is available in the evening upon request at an additional cost.

Temple of Heaven: Built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty, Temple of Heaven is a complex of Taoist buildings where emperors of Ming and Qing dynasties visited for annual ceremonies of pray for good harvests. Located in the south of Central Beijing, it covers an area of 273 hectares. Temple of Heaven was enrolled as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998.
Tai chi Experience at the Temple of Heaven: Tai Chi is an internal martial art system which places emphasis on the development and control of Chi (Consciousness) energy within the body. In the largest park in Beijing - the Temple of Heaven, you will be able to practice Tai Chi in the morning under the guidance of your teacher.

Day 4 - Tuesday, August 6
Services & Highlights:The Great Wall during the day and tai chi lessons in the evening

The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 8,851.8 kilometers (5,500 miles) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the sections are now in ruins or have disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance.


Day 5: Wednesday, August 7
Services & Highlights: Visit Summer Palace and training during the day and free night for people who is interested in visiting the bar and night club area near Beihai Park

The Summer Palace radiates fully the natural beauty and the grandeur of royal gardens. Composed mainly of Longevity Hill (Wanshou Shan) and Kunming Lake, it occupies an area of 300.59 hectares (742.8 acres). There are over 3,000 man-made ancient structures which count building space of more than 70,000 square meters, including pavilions, towers, bridges, corridors, etc. It can be divided into four parts: the Court Area, Front Hill Area, Rear Hill Area and Lake Area.

  
Day 6: Thursday, August 8
Services & Highlights: Free morning then take train T97A in the afternoon at 1pm to Zhengzhou city and arrive in the evening at 6:40pm. (5 and half hours) free evening, clubing and foot massage in the evening are recommended.
Accommodation: Zhongzhou International Hotel; Lunch and dinner on your own.


Day 7: Friday, August 9
Services & Highlights: take coach to visit Tai Chi village during the day and additional training in the village is available upon request. Heading to Shaolin Temple in the afternoon
Accommodation: Shaolin Chanwu Hotel (4 star standard)
               
Day 8: Saturday, August 10
Services & Highlights: Visit Shaolin Kungfu school and Shaolin Temple during the day then take coach to Nanyang city.
Accommodation: Nanyang Hotel (4 star standard)

Day 9: Sunday, August 11
Services & Highlights: Practice Tai Chi & Push Hands with people from local schools in the morning, then take coach to Wudang mountain at lunch time and arrive in the afternoon (2pm), practice in the evening

Day 10: Monday, August 12
Services & Highlights: visit Wudang mountain and additional training with the Taoist monks is available on request (for an additional fee)

Day 11: Tuesday, August 13
Services & Highlights: Visit Wudang mountain and additional training during the day
Accommodation: take overnight train K1606 to Zhangjiajie Forest Park at 11:09pm

Day 12: Wednesday, August 14
Services & Highlights: Arrival in Zhangjiajie in the morning at 8am, Relax in the morning. Yellow Dragon cave and Baofeng Lake visit during the day and meeting Grandmaster Li Zhiyi and Qigong Master in the evening.
Accommodation: Wulinyuan Hotel (4 star standard)

Day 13: Thursday, August 15
Services & Highlights: Visit Tianmengshan mountain all day (cable car trip, additional fee is applied, concession fee is available for child and over 60's people) and additional Blessing Ceremony in the temple will be available in the afternoon upon request. Additional Shen Gong training with Grandmaster Li Zhiyi in the evening at 8pm. All day training for students who do not go for sightseeing.

Day 14: Friday, August 16
Visit Huangsizai mountain in Zhangjiajie Forest Park during the day and additional Shen Gong training with Grandmaster Li Zhiyi in the evening at 8pm.
All day training for students who do not go for sightseeing.
Accommodation: Wulinyuan Hotel

Day 15: Saturday, August 17
Services & Highlights: Visit Gold whip valley in Zhangjiajie Forest Park during the day and additional Shen Gong training with Grandmaster Li Zhiyi in the evening at 8pm
All day training for students who do not go for sightseeing.

Day 16: Sunday, August 18
Services & Highlights: Visit Tianzisan and Yuanjiajie mountain in Zhangjiajie Forest Park during the day
Accommodation: Take evening train to Huaihua and arrive at TCM Hospital 


Days 17 - 21st: Monday-Friday, August 19-23
