Program Description:
Sport, culture and media converge in this unique academic experience. Examine the myriad elements of British popular culture and counter culture with a critical lens, and seek to uncover the meaning in the messages we encounter on a daily basis. Delve into the English obsession for football as we study the international and domestic political dimensions of this hugely popular sport in the birthplace of the modern game and the home to the strongest domestic league in the world.

You may also view the role of sports media in British culture by examining its history and current state while comparing it to the sports media in the United States. Tour historical sporting venues, examine the use of social media and the popularity of fantasy sports, investigate the NFL's grassroots campaign to expand American football in London.

For something more personal, explore the spiritual and psychological impact of preparing for and taking a journey, then document your experiences “beyond the selfie” through photography, journals, video, essays and documentaries, while reflecting on global communities and how those communities converge in London.

Includes several class-specific activities plus a day trip to such locations as Bath, Stonehenge & Salisbury, Canterbury & Dover, or Stratford & Warwick.

Location

Heart of London

Mayfair's parks and gardens are some of the most beautiful and original in all of London, such as the Grosvenor, Hanover and Berkeley Squares. The US Embassy and many other diplomatic buildings are situated in Mayfair. A bustling social hub, Mayfair is full of people from all over the world. Beautiful squares make it a peaceful haven, not to mention a stunning place in which to live, work and shop.
