Program Description:
Program Overview

The interview is intimate, immediate, and often an entrée to the soul. Conducting interviews can be both great fun and an art form. The interview is a critical tool for journalists, and every human interaction constitutes a form of interview. This class is designed to improve and professionalize students’ interviewing skills, from the art of posing questions to the critical task of listening actively and creatively to answers.

In this course, you will not just learn to interview. You will learn how to cross national, cultural and linguistic barriers while securing sought after information via the interview. Therefore, taking these courses in a Spanish-speaking city in the heart of Argentina, provides various venues for fieldwork. You will help choose and secure your interview subjects, and the interviewing processes and resulting stories you create will be presented, analyzed, and critiqued in class. In addition to the primary text, excerpts of model interviews will be studied as will the techniques used to secure them. You will also learn how to interview through language barriers without formal translators. You will learn how language barriers can work to the interviewer’s advantage (and how to avoid interview problems created by language barriers). You will learn why words are not the only tool for interviews.

Additionally, you will complete major contextualized final assignments based on your fieldwork and be guided towards options for their publication.

Academic Details

Courses will be taught by Professor Peter Laufer from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. Each course is specially designed to take advantage of the rich opportunities that Argentina offers as a classroom. Courses make use of a variety of materials and texts, all of which are provided as part of the program fee.

Though courses will be taught in English, one of the key elements of these courses is learning to transcend language barriers. To that end, you will receive specific training in interview techniques that do not require a common language between interviewee and interviewer. The courses will be supplemented with Spanish language study (basic and intermediate levels) and relevant field excursions.

Students who wish to extend their international experience will have the option of pursuing a four-week internship with an international organization (pending language proficiency) or a faculty-supervised independent research project.
